Product Overview

Offered here is an original WWII-era Collimatore Ottico per Mortaio da 81 Mod. 35, the standard-issue optical sighting system for the Italian Regio Esercito’s 81mm Mod. 35 mortar. These instruments are authentic equipment and come complete with their original canvas-covered wooden carrying cases, making them exceptional collectibles or restoration-grade parts for reenactors, militaria collectors, or museums of Axis Militaria.

  • Used but fully functional: All adjustment dials move freely, optics are intact and remain very usable for their original sighting function.

  • Exterior condition: Units may show minor service wear or finish blemishes consistent with age and field use.

  • Original case included: Each sight comes housed in its period-correct wooden box, complete with internal felt-lined compartment and shaped wood inserts. While the wood may show minor cracks or cosmetic imperfections, the cases remain structurally sound and in good overall condition.

This collimator was designed to allow precise laying of the mortar in both azimuth (direction) and elevation (range). The sight includes:

  • A horizontal traverse dial marked “DIREZIONE” for lateral aiming

  • A vertical elevation drum for angle adjustment

  • An optical viewer with internal reticle for indirect fire alignment

  • A “PARALLELISMO” adjustment screw for internal optical calibration

  • Markings include “Per Mortaio da 81 Mod. 35” and unit serial numbers (e.g., MA 045)

To use this sight in the field:

  1. Mount the collimator onto the bipod bracket of the 81mm mortar.

  2. Level the mortar using its built-in spirit levels.

  3. Set deflection using the DIREZIONE scale to align with the firing azimuth.

  4. Dial in elevation based on your firing chart or calculated range.

  5. Peer through the reticle to align with a reference point or aiming post.

  6. Fire and adjust as needed for range and windage—these optics were essential to accurate indirect fire support in WWII combat.

These sights were used by Italian infantry, paratrooper, and Alpini units throughout WWII. some units (not ours) were captured and reused by the German Wehrmacht under the designation 8.1cm GrW 276(i).
